Every cell lives or dies by how many neighbours it has, so paint a few cells or use the dropdown to drop in a famous pattern, then press play.

Yellow cells were just born, blue cells are holding on, and fading embers mark where something died.

Keyboard

• Click or tab into the stage first, then Arrow keys move the cell cursor
• Shift with an arrow moves ten cells at a time
• Space toggles the cell, or places the chosen pattern
• P plays and pauses
• S steps one generation

With a pointer, drag to paint. Hold the right button to erase, or turn on erase mode.
